Characterizing predictable classes of processes

چکیده
The problem is sequence prediction in the following setting. A sequence x1, . . . , xn, . . . of discrete-valued observations is generated according to some unknown probabilistic law (measure) μ. After observing each outcome, it is required to give the conditional probabilities of the next observation. The measure μ belongs to an arbitrary class C of stochastic processes. We are interested in predictors ρ whose conditional probabilities converge to the “true” μ-conditional probabilities if any μ ∈ C is chosen to generate the data. We show that if such a predictor exists, then a predictor can also be obtained as a convex combination of a countably many elements of C. In other words, it can be obtained as a Bayesian predictor whose prior is concentrated on a countable set. This result is established for two very different measures of performance of prediction, one of which is very strong, namely, total variation, and the other is very weak, namely, prediction in expected average Kullback-Leibler divergence.

Characterizing sub-topical functions
In this paper, we first give a characterization of sub-topical functions with respect to their lower level sets and epigraph. Next, by using two different classes of elementary functions, we present a characterization of sub-topical functions with respect to their polar functions, and investigate the relation between polar functions and support sets of this class of functions. Finally, we obtai...
متن کاملOn the Role of Derivational Processes in the Formation of Non-Taxonomic Classes of Lexical Units in Russian
The paper is focused on classes of lexical units which arise as a result of derivational processes – word formation and semantic transfers, acting either in isolation or together, on the basis of common semantic foundations that bind targets and sources of derivation. The lexical items which constitute the classes under study vary in their denotative characteristics and due to their categ...
متن کاملMartingale - type processes indexed by the real line
Some classes of increment martingales, and the corresponding localized classes, are studied. An increment martingale is indexed by R and its increment processes are martingales. We focus primarily on the behaviour as time goes to −∞ in relation to the quadratic variation or the predictable quadratic variation, and we relate the limiting behaviour to the martingale property. Finally, integration...
متن کاملPredictability on finite horizon for processes with exponential decrease of energy on higher frequencies
The paper presents sufficient conditions of predictability for continuous time processes in deterministic setting. We found that processes with exponential decay on energy for higher frequencies are predictable in some weak sense on some finite time horizon defined by the rate of decay. Moreover, this predictability can be achieved uniformly over classes of processes. Some explicit formulas for...
متن کاملPredictability of band-limited and other processes
We study pathwise predictability of continuous time processes in deterministic setting, when the convolution integrals over future time can be approximated by integrals over past time. Uniform prediction in some weak sense with respect to certain classes of inputs is discussed. We found that all band-limited processes are predictable in this sense, as well as high-frequent processes with zero e...
